Hospital mobile app: features for patients, doctors and administrators

What should a hospital app include for patients, doctors and management? Appointments, reports, medication tracking, video calls and an admin panel.

If you are thinking about a mobile app for a hospital, the real question isn't "should we have an app?" but how patients, doctors and management will meet in the same system. When appointments live in one place, reports in another and contact with the doctor stays on the phone, both patients and staff get worn out. In this post, drawing on a hospital app we built, we describe what a hospital mobile app needs on each of its three sides.

Who does a hospital app serve?

A good hospital app brings three parties into one structure:

  • The patient: books appointments, follows reports and medication, and talks to the doctor,
  • The doctor: manages daily appointments and availability and accesses the patient's reports,
  • Hospital management: monitors doctor and patient records, appointment approvals, payments and statistics from a web panel.

What a hospital patient app needs

  • Secure sign-in: Signing in with a phone number and SMS verification confirms the patient's identity simply and securely.
  • Appointments: Doctors should be listed by department, and the patient should see available times and book in a single flow.
  • Reports: Patients should be able to see their results and reports in the app.
  • Medication tracking: They should be able to follow the medication they take and its schedule.
  • Health packages: The packages the hospital offers should be visible in the same place.
  • Video consultation: Where appropriate, the conversation between patient and doctor should be possible from within the app.
  • Department assistant: A patient who doesn't know which department to visit should be able to describe the complaint and get a pointer. This assistant doesn't diagnose; it only suggests a suitable department and directs the patient to a doctor.

What the doctor side needs

  • Tracking daily appointments on a single screen,
  • The doctor opening and managing their own slot calendar,
  • Access to the patient's reports,
  • The ability to leave notes after a consultation.

The doctor side should be designed not as a new burden but as a tool that makes the work they already do easier.

What the admin panel needs

  • Management of doctor and patient records,
  • Appointment approvals, and slot and time management,
  • Payment tracking,
  • Statistics by department.

This is where the real value lies for hospital management: seeing the whole process on one screen and basing decisions on data.

Health data and security

Health information is sensitive personal data. That's why access permissions need to be designed correctly from the start, verification needs to be secure and it must be clear where the data will be kept. We don't give legal advice; we recommend clarifying data-protection and healthcare regulation requirements with a legal adviser.

Connecting to existing systems

If the hospital has its own appointment or information system, how the app will talk to it should be discussed at the very start of the project. Connections like this are among the items that most affect scope and timeline; in our custom software and integration service we take this on end to end.

What determines time and cost?

For mobile app projects, the timeline varies with the scope; as a general guide, think of 6–12 weeks. The main factors that drive time and price are:

  • Which of the patient, doctor and management sides are in scope,
  • The number of modules such as video consultation, payments and reports,
  • Whether integration with existing hospital systems is needed,
  • Whether the mobile side covers iOS and Android together (cross-platform makes this possible from one codebase).

Frequently asked questions

Does a hospital app work on both iOS and Android?

Yes. When we build the mobile side cross-platform, iOS and Android are released together from a single codebase.

Does the department assistant make a diagnosis?

No. The assistant only suggests a suitable department based on the complaint the patient writes and directs them to a doctor; diagnosis and treatment decisions belong to the doctor.

Is the admin panel mobile or web?

For hospital management we build a web panel: records, appointment approvals, payments and statistics are followed from a desktop.

Will it work with our hospital's existing appointment system?

That depends on the scope of the integration. The connection methods the existing system offers are reviewed at the start of the project and planned according to the scope.

Conclusion

In a hospital app, the patient sees appointments and reports in one place, the doctor handles their work on one screen and management sees the whole process in one panel.
